THE EFFECT OF LACK OF QUALIFIED TEACHERS ON SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS PERFORMANCE IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ABSTRACT This research study was designed to examine the effect of lack of qualified teachers on the performances of students in English Language in Egor Local Government Area. The data used in this study were obtained through the use of questionnaires and SS II results for the 2005 and 2006 session served as a basis for necessary and relevant information. Two hypotheses were formulated and tested. The first hypotheses which state that teacher’s qualification do not contribute to the performances of students ways rejected. Similarly the second hypothesis which states that the teacher’s qualification and experience on the job has effect on the student’s performance was accepted. At the end of the research study, the result obtained revealed that student’s performance are affected by teachers qualification and experience on the job. Government should improve the quality of the teachers by way of seminars, workshop and better remuneration. The numerous contributions of science subjects to the social economic and technological development of most nations of the world is well recognized hence its basic knowledge is needed by everyone to ensure that the profitable exploration of economical technological potential is sustained. It is therefore necessary to lay emphasis on economical knowledge. The history of science subjects is as old as the world in the industrialized countries people like Socratics, Aristotle’s, Navier, Stokes, Newton, Ziegler and Natran to mention a few were able to make a breakthrough and a valuable contribution in their different fields which were aimed at alleviating the social suffering of mankind. The pursuits of science and technology are not restricted to the industrialized countries alone. The third world nations especially the Africa countries and trying to put in their most effort in the development of their economical and technological base since economic is not transferred. Nigeria has been making efforts to keep abreast with her counterparts in the development of economical knowledge. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM In Nigeria, the rate of unqualified teachers is very high; most of them acquire their certificate through various means in most education institutions teachers that are not trained to teach subjects such as science subjects are made to do so thereby not giving the students the required training and knowledge about that particular subject. This has really affected the learning of the students. Also, in most cases, SSCE holders are made to teach in primary and secondary schools and this reduced the standard of learning in such school. Most of this schools that does not have, qualified teachers are those private schools that are approved by the federal ministries of education. PURPOSE OF THE STUDY The main purpose of this research work is to categorically look into the importance of English Language in the society and the effect of lack of qualified teachers on the performance of students in English Language in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. And suggested possible lasting solution to these problems. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY The result of this study will enable the authorities concerned to know the effect of lack of qualified teachers on the performance of students in science students. As the saying goes that when the root cause of a problem is knew is know there is a solution effective education of this study would lead to a search of an effective solution to the problem. There by improving the state of science in the nation. RESEARCH QUESTION From this study the following research question would be considered. 1. What are the causes of lack of qualified teachers in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State? 2. What are the major effects of lack of qualified teachers in the performance of students in English Language in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State? 3. What are the importances of science in the society? 4. What are the recommended solutions to this problem? SCOPE OF THE STUDY AND DELIMITATION Nigeria being a developing country cannot afford to neglect its educational sectors, of which science subject’s education is of vital importance.
